From Cleaning Floors to CEO: Joey’s Inspiring Journey to McDonald’s Ownership
Discover how one man's relentless work ethic and vision propelled him from a student cleaning floors to owning three successful McDonald's franchises in the UK.

A Dream Built in the Lobby
Most people saw a student cleaning floors. Joey Enjuki saw his future. When he first arrived in the UK from Ghana at age 22, the reality of the diaspora was far from glamorous. While juggling a demanding master's degree, Joey took a job at McDonald's. His role was in the lobby. He spent his days clearing tables and scrubbing floors. He did not let the temporary nature of the work diminish his long-term vision.
I told myself that whatever it takes to make this dream work in the UK, I am going to do it to make that dream work.
The Discipline of the Grind
Joey’s daily routine was a masterclass in resilience. He would head to campus early for his studies and then jump on a train to start his shift. After closing the restaurant late at night, he often walked home, arriving near midnight only to open his books until 2:00 AM. This was not just about survival. It was about proving to himself that he could handle the pressure required to build something lasting.
Reframing the Cultural Mindset
Growing up in Ghana, Joey was taught the traditional values of silence and humility. In the competitive UK job market, he realized these traits could be a barrier to growth. He learned that being the smartest person in the room is not enough. You must also be the one who speaks up.
- Visibility matters: Sharing ideas and contributing to projects is essential for career progression.
- Hard work outweighs grades: Intelligence gets you in the room, but execution builds wealth.
- Adaptability is key: Changing your approach does not mean losing your values.
The Path to Ownership
Joey’s persistence eventually led him from the lobby to the Royal Bank of Scotland, then to consultancy at Accenture, and finally to his goal: becoming a McDonald’s franchisee. Today, he operates three restaurants, employs over 300 people, and manages a multi-million pound business. His journey is a testament to the power of staying focused on the vision even when the tasks in front of you seem small.
