Escaping the Trap: From Security Guard to Tech Entrepreneur
Godwin shares how he escaped the cycle of low-wage shift work to build a six-figure business by prioritizing long-term growth over immediate gratification.

The Price of Immediate Gratification
We often find ourselves caught in a cycle of survival. For many in the diaspora, the pressure to send money home and cover rising costs leads to a trap of endless shift work. My guest today, Godwin, knows this exhaustion all too well. He spent years working 14-hour shifts as a security guard in Dubai, standing for hours without days off. Yet, he realized that the work would never pause to let him level up. He understood that to escape a mediocre environment, he had to stop playing by the rules of a system designed to keep him in place.
If I am praying for God to bless me, I should have something different that God can use to bless me.
Trading Convenience for Future Growth
Godwin’s journey from a frustrated graduate in Cameroon to a six-figure business owner is a masterclass in discipline. When he realized his traditional degrees were not enough to secure his future, he went to Dubai and started from absolute zero. Instead of chasing overtime pay like his peers, he chose to sacrifice his comfort. He studied tech in the middle of the night, often sleeping on the floor of his workplace just to reclaim the hours he would have spent commuting. While others asked why he was wasting time on books when they were earning the same salary, Godwin was playing a long game.
The Danger of the Comfort Zone
It is easy to get comfortable in jobs that provide steady, albeit limited, income. However, as Godwin explains, this is exactly where the trap lies. Relying on extra shifts provides immediate cash, but it taxes your health and steals the time you need to build a specialized skill set. The shift from a survival mindset to an investment mindset is the most difficult step any immigrant can take. When you stop chasing the next paycheck and start chasing competence, you open doors that were previously locked.
- Build a skill: Rely on your expertise rather than just your labor.
- Network intentionally: Use platforms like LinkedIn to build a professional brand.
- Embrace the long term: Sacrifice immediate comfort for future autonomy.
Breaking the Cycle
Godwin’s path shows that geographical relocation alone is not the answer. Whether you are in Dubai, the UK, or anywhere else, the mindset you carry determines your ceiling. By consistently choosing development over exhaustion, he eventually transitioned into a high-paying tech career. His story is a powerful reminder that while we cannot control every circumstance, we can control how we spend our quiet hours.
