Africans in the UK can spend years working overtime, chasing money and building a life abroad while missing the moments that matter most with their children. This conversation looks at African parents abroad, the pressure to keep earning and what happens when work starts taking priority over family.

We talk about parenting in the African diaspora, raising children in the UK, childcare, grandparents, overtime, family time and the mindset that makes struggling and constant hustling feel like a badge of honour.

The conversation also gets into childhood trauma, discipline versus punishment, fear-based parenting, emotional availability, communication and the way some parenting patterns are passed from one generation to the next.

At the centre of it all is a simple question: what are we actually working so hard for if we are not present to enjoy the family we are providing for?

Africans in UK can earn more, save more and still struggle to build wealth. In this conversation, @ChideraPeters breaks down why saving too much, relying on credit, overspending, black tax and trying to look wealthy can keep Africans abroad financially stuck.

We talk about when to stop saving and start investing, why high income does not automatically mean wealth, building wealth where you live, pensions, mortgages, investing your first £100 and how to find money hiding in your own bank statements.

The conversation also gets into black tax, debt, buy now pay later and why some Africans in the UK work crazy hours but still have very little to show for it.

The biggest lesson? You need to understand where your money is going before you can make it work for you.

Africans in the UK can spend years studying, applying for jobs and collecting rejection emails without ever getting the career they came abroad to build. For many Africans abroad and across the African diaspora, the reality of life abroad is that a degree alone does not guarantee a career.

In this conversation, Efemena shares how he went from working night shifts in a warehouse after completing a master's in data analytics to becoming a business intelligence developer and later working with major organisations.

We talk about the immigrant dilemma, UK job experience, CVs, interviews, career progression and why experience can matter more than qualifications when you're trying to break into the UK job market.

Efemena also explains the lessons he learned the hard way and how Amdari was created to help immigrants gain practical experience and become more employable.

Africans in UK can spend their entire working life chasing the next payslip without ever feeling like they are actually getting ahead. For Africans abroad and across the African diaspora, the reality of life abroad can become a cycle of salary, bills, overtime and sending money home, while the bigger career and financial goals keep getting pushed further away.

In this episode of The Untamed Section, Godwin shares how he went from working brutal security shifts in Dubai to building a career in tech. He worked 14-hour shifts, sometimes with no days off, but deliberately used whatever time he had to learn new skills and change his situation.

We talk about the salary trap, overtime, care and warehouse work, career progression and why immediate money can sometimes keep people comfortable instead of moving forward. Godwin explains why he believes Africans in the UK need to think beyond simply earning more and start using their time to build skills, networks and opportunities.

He also shares how he moved into tech, eventually secured a £65,000 job after arriving in the UK, and later built businesses alongside his corporate career.

The conversation is ultimately about time. How much of your life are you exchanging for a salary, and what are you actually building while you're working?

Africans in UK on Sponsorship visa are sharing a side of life abroad that many people never see. For Africans abroad and across the African diaspora, the reality of the abroad experience can involve unpaid wages, impossible working hours, visa pressure, debt, exhaustion and the constant fear of losing your right to stay.

In this episode of The Untamed Section, an anonymous guest shares his COS journey after spending £11,700 to come to the UK. What he was promised was completely different from what he found.

He arrived expecting accommodation, work and support. Instead, he spent months without the job he had been sponsored for, surviving on odd jobs that paid as little as £50 a day. When the sponsored job finally started, he faced long journeys between clients, pressure to get a car, driving licence deadlines, insurance problems and wages that were sometimes delayed for months.

At one point, the pressure became so severe that suicidal thoughts became a normal part of his day. While driving on the motorway, he describes having thoughts of deliberately crashing the car.
We discuss the reality of COS jobs, why some workers feel trapped by sponsorship, delayed salaries, working seven days a week and the fear of becoming an illegal immigrant.

This is only Part 1. Part 2 goes deeper.

Africans in UK can spend years building a life abroad while quietly feeling like the life they wanted is passing them by. Across the African diaspora, the abroad experience is often presented as success, but the reality of life abroad can involve sacrifice, uncertainty, difficult jobs, immigration struggles and time that cannot be recovered.

Lulu has lived in the UK for 21 years, and this conversation is about what those 21 years actually cost her. She came to Britain at 21 with big ambitions, a degree in economics and plans to build a career. Instead, she found herself applying for hundreds of jobs, being told she lacked UK experience, taking jobs below her qualifications and spending years trying to secure the immigration status she thought would be straightforward.

She also opens up about being homeless in the UK, struggling financially, walking away from jobs that were damaging her quality of life and eventually realising that staying in Britain at any cost was not necessarily the same as building a successful life.

We talk about why Africans in the UK are often told to “be grateful” whenever they speak honestly about their struggles. Lulu explains why gratitude and frustration can exist at the same time, and why there is no prize for suffering quietly.

The conversation also gets into career progression, integration, confidence, communication, qualifications versus experience and why some African migrants become comfortable with simply having a job instead of building the career they originally came for.

After 21 years, Lulu believes the UK gave her resilience, patience and strength. But it also took something she cannot get back: her time.

Africans in UK are falling into a trap of endless overtime. You are trading your actual future for a temporary paycheck.

Many people moving to the uk believe that working extra shifts is the only path to success. It is not. This episode of The Untamed Section exposes the harsh reality of why chasing pounds often results in stunted career growth and wasted potential. You might think you are getting ahead, but you are likely just spinning your wheels while your real ambitions gather dust.

We break down the difference between surviving and building wealth. Whether you are dealing with the pressures of uk life or trying to navigate professional stagnation, this conversation forces you to confront the true cost of your time. If you are part of the community of nigerians in uk or any diaspora group, you need to understand that overtime is a tool, not a lifestyle. Stop sacrificing your long-term career progression for short-term gains that keep you stuck in a cycle of poverty.

You can make more money abroad today and still be destroying your future.

In this episode of The Untamed Section, Ken explains why he believes too many Africans in the UK are choosing overtime over career progression. He shares his own journey from working on the construction field to moving into management, and why he believes you have to be willing to start from the bottom and develop yourself.

We talk about career progression, professional networking, investing in yourself, property, mortgages and the difference between simply earning more money and actually building wealth.

Ken also explains why he would rather use his time to develop other skills and income streams than spend his entire life working extra shifts. The conversation gets into the pressure to chase pounds, send money home and build property back home while potentially sacrificing your own time and future.

The point isn't that overtime is bad. It's knowing whether the extra money is actually moving you forward — or keeping you stuck.
