From £84k in Debt to Ownership: A Journey of Resilience
When Ugo moved to the UK to become a professional footballer, he never expected to lose £84,000 and embark on a five-year journey of extreme work and recovery.

Chasing a Dream
Ugo arrived in the UK at 21 with one clear goal: to play professional football. He navigated the complexities of international student visas and semi-professional contracts, only to have the door closed by policy restrictions and the global pandemic. What started as a quest for glory quickly spiraled into a search for financial stability.
The Cost of Ambition
In an effort to sustain himself, Ugo turned to drop shipping, network marketing, and trading. He describes his early forays into these spaces as a mix of luck and, ultimately, a series of expensive mistakes. After a brief, high-stakes win in the crypto market, a market crash and a fraudulent prop firm left him staring down a massive mountain of debt totaling £84,210.
I had to sit down and calculate. When I'm calculating my debt, I add the future end payment of the interest, not just how much I borrowed.
The Grind to Recovery
To pay back every penny, Ugo adopted a radical approach. He didn't just work; he pushed his body to the absolute limit. For nearly five years, he maintained a punishing schedule that often exceeded 100 hours of work per week.
- He worked back-to-back shifts across multiple care agencies.
- He lived on 2 to 3 hours of sleep between day and night shifts.
- He cut all personal expenses, getting married on a budget of just £2,000.
- He prioritized debt repayment above holidays, eating out, and his own health.
A Lesson in Ownership
The experience changed his mindset entirely. Ugo stopped chasing quick wins and started studying finance, eventually finding freedom through discipline and hard work. Today, he is a father, a professional, and the author of Overtime to Ownership. His story is a raw reminder that resilience is built in the moments we feel most broken.
